Description:Isolated from human corneal stroma, Human Keratocytes (HKs) are also known as corneal fibroblasts. Human Corneal Keratocytes (HCK) are sandwiched in the corneal stroma, between orthogonally arranged layers of collagen lamellae. HCK are highly specialized. Keratocytes are the source of stromal collagen and proglycans, therefore, they play an important role in transparency maintenance, wound healing, and synthesizing its components. Signaling molecules such as IL1 alpha and TNF-alpha secreted by the upper layers prompt keratocytes apoptosis after cornea injury or trauma. And neighboring keratocytes become active, proliferate and synthesizing matrix metalloproteinases to promote tissue remodeling when they are acted upon by those molecules.;
